Turn back time with Restore version with comments and tracked changes

December 11, 2024

It’s “about time”! Now you can restore a single file or your whole project to a previous version with its comments and tracked changes with just a click.

Who can use it?

Anyone who has edit capabilities on a project can restore a file (i.e. tex, bib, or other file) or project version from the past 24 hours. Only users who have the “Full document history” premium feature will be able to restore file and project versions older than 24 hours. Need to upgrade? Find the right plan for you.

How do I use it?

Restore a single file

It’s always been possible to restore a single deleted file from history. But now you can navigate to a version in the project history, and select a single file from it to be restored. This will revert the file to its contents at the time selected as well as any comments and tracked changes.

Simply go to History, select the project version that contains the file you want, go to the project file list on the left side of the screen, select the file you wish to restore, and then select “Restore this version”.

Restore a full project

Odds are you might want to restore the entirety of a project. Just go to the appropriate version in the project history and select “Restore project to this version”. This will restore the whole project to the content in all of the files at that time and date with its comments and tracked changes.

What else should I know?

  • Resolved comments can be restored; deleted comments cannot.
  • Unresolved comment threads will contain the entire comment history starting from the first comment up to those in the most recent version.
